NEW WAVE

In the 1980s, in California, at the height of the musical revolution sparked by the rise of synthesizers, a counterculture emerged within the Vietnamese-American community, known among its own as New Wave. Influenced by synth pop and visuals that blended punk and gothic aesthetics, this movement is documented by Elizabeth Ai, who, through her own biography and family history, embarks on a reconciliatory journey to gain a deeper understanding of this cultural phenomenon. Along the way, she confronts deep-seated wounds stemming from generational trauma, the impact of immigration, cultural clashes, and the legacy of the Vietnam War - all set to the soundtrack that defined this movement.
