Every once in a while, like some kind of astral event, art and life intersect to challenge and radically push the limits of convention. Unabashedly progressive in their sound and unashamed of their eclectic roots, Voïvod has become synonymous with pioneering music, and not only within the heavy metal realm.
From unlikely origins in northern Québec, Canada, at the height of the Cold War, Voïvod’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi aesthetic, fueled by a youthful obsession with their instruments, took them from underground success to sharing dates and tours with Iron Maiden, Rush, and Metallica.
There were, of course, high and lows throughout those 40 years, from major-label support and Billboard recognition to seismic line-up changes, to Voïvod being recognized by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences with a Juno Award for best hard rock/metal album of the year for The Wake (2019) and Synchro-Anarchy (2023).
