SAURANGI: A Hundred Different Colours

The Sarangi is a breathtaking instrument which is known to resonate with the listener’s inner voice. To learn this instrument means a lifelong journey of search within the vast ocean that is hindustani classical music. A fulfilling practice; however, the history of this particular instrument has faced many challenges towards its survival. At this moment in time, some players of the instrument are hopeful that the sarangi is ready to be heard again with the same fervour while some musicians are concerned whether the instrument can withstand the weight of the past.

*** The two short film sessions presented in this edition of SONICA EKRANO take place under the aegis of the European project tekhnē, dedicated to innovative uses and approaches to technology from a user perspective.

The second session focuses on the role of musical instruments – in the case of Saurangi, examining the weight of tradition, and in the case of Something to take care of, exploring the often misunderstood lightness of the new.
