The music of Porto-based João Pais Filipe emerges from the construction of gongs, cymbals, and other metal percussion instruments, where he explores their sculptural dimension and acoustic properties. With a liberated approach, he navigates the tension between the mechanical and the organic, between repetition and looping, between the dance floor and the mantra. He creates a unique space (“ethno-techno”?), where dancefloor cadences are appropriated and reinterpreted through a custom-designed drum kit, channeled through imperfections and rustic textures to express new possibilities. An artist who, like few others could, embodies several of the thematic threads in the 2025 SONICA EKRANO program, and who returns to a venue where he has already brought joy to many.
